Allison transmission in 2004 chevy silverado 3500, question about internal filter.?
Q. I have a 2004 chevy silverado 3500 with a 6.6L turbo diesel and allison transmission, i have heard that the internal filter only needs to be changed if i have the entire transmission overhauled. is this true? also where is the filter located, is it in the pan?

A. yes it is in the pan the filter on the out side or the screw on is the main filter to kept changed it will take most of the dirt out the one in the pan need to be changed win you put new trans fluid in that the best time to do it.

My chevy truck has an allison 1000 transmission in it, it has a spin on and an internal filter.?
Q. i change the spin off filter about twice in 50,000 miles and then i do the fluid at 50,000 miles. since it has the internal filter in the pan should i still drop the pan and look for sludge? would there be any in the bottom of the pan since it has a spin off and an internal filter. the reason i am asking is because it has a plug in the drain pan and if i dont need to drop the pan i wont. Do i just fill the transmission back up through the dipstick tube? Thanks

A. Have you asked the dealership service department about this? I am suprised that it would have two filters. Now the one in the transmission may be a screen, which if it is I would not worry about. Sense the pan has a drain hole overall there is not any need to worry about sludge. As thin as the fluid is it will remove 99.? % of the sludge (if any) when it is changed.

A. I have an Allison in my truck and the manual says to check the fluid with the engine idling in Park. There is a cold engine range of marks and a hot engine range of marks. The instructions also include a procedure to use before checking the level. With the engine running and your foot on the brake, shift into Drive to fill that part of the transmission. Then shift into Reverse to fill that part of the transmission, then into Park while actually measuring the level. btw - The upper set of marks are for the hot engine level range unlike the previous posting stated. The fluid expands when it is heated.

A. I have seen the adapters to put an Allison behind a Powerstroke, but I don't know if the IDI is the same pattern. A good place to find out is a web site where all the Ford Diesel enthusiasts hang out, WWW.Thedieselstop.COM. There are a couple of folks that can really build a tough E4OD, John Wood in Holtville Ca and Brians Truck Stop somewhere in Arkansas. They both have web sites and can probably do the job, both have pretty good reputations and are known to stand behind their work.

A. You'll find its far cheaper to just build up your stock 47R transmission instead of an Allison swap. An Allison is a good transmission but its not that good. In fact many Duramax racers swap their Allison out for the Chrysler Torqueflite because of differences in the way they're built. A Torqueflite does not have to defuel to shift, try to get an Allison to shift without defueling and things will break. Its just the way they're built. As far as building up a 47R vs. an Allison swap, I think an Allison swap will run you about 10k, whereas you can get a 47R that will handle anything you can throw at it for about 5k. If your 47R is giving you problems your best bet is a rebuild with some better parts. If you're not making much power over… [cont.]

Q. Which is better for diesel pickups, Allison or Aisin Transmission?
Asked by n229q - Sat Aug 18 22:30:24 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments
A. So far the Aisin transmission is only found behind the 6.7 Chassis Cab Rams. The Ram pickup uses a 68RFE, not an Aisin. I have not seen very much feedback on the Aisin. So far the Allison trans behind the Duramax Diesels has proven to be a very good transmission. However, Ford's Torqshift has a slight edge in strength...however the Allison gets thumbs up for being a 6 speed, vs the Torqshift's 5 speeds. To answer your question, I would say it is a toss up until we learn more about the Aisin.

What causes the transmission in a 2002 GMC SIERRA 2500HD not to shift into Drive "sometimes"?
Q. 2002 GMC 2500 HD 6.6 liter Diesel w/ Allison Transmission sometimes will only engage in 2nd or 3rd gear (can remember which it said) but most of the time its normal. service engine soon light is on. It shifts through the gears great like there is no problems when it goes into Drive. it also shifts normal when it is in 2nd or 3rd when it doesn't engage in the Drive position. Could this be a "speed sensor" problem?
Asked by George - Wed Feb 3 20:35:45 2010 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The service engine soon light is a service reminder that indicates something is do for a service. If your truck has 80k or higher miles, it is most likely do for a transmission service. Dirty trans. fluid could be the cause of your shifting problems and is usually noticeable when the engine temperature increases. Check your owners manual for the service that is due for the vehicles mileage. I don't think the speed sensor has anything to do with your shifting problem. Also, drive/overdrive is for highway speeds over 50mph and 3rd is intended for lower speeds. Most lock up torque converter/overdrive systems can engage around 35-40mph, but this adds extra wear on the internal clutch packs and increased trans. temps. Hope this helps.… [cont.]

A. Ive seen people do it in 87 Chevy trucks. Don't see why it can't be done. Anything is possible if you got the skill or money if you dont have the skill. The hardest part will be the fact that the Allison is a computer controlled tranny and I dont think your 87 has a computer, even if it does the computer most likely will not be able to control it. There is a company called PCS thats makes stand alone tranny computers. The rest of the swap shouldn't be that difficult. Might ask around these message boards for info.
