A. Wow. I wish I was talented that way. I don't know anyone who does this on the net but handmade furniture sells really well in my area (Colorado). There are several stores that buy from people like you as well. If it was me I would contact your local furniture stores and see if they would do something like that or maybe sell your stuff on consignment. Also there is a guy here that runs continuous ads in The Shopper and has made quite a success of selling his things that way. The advantage to the internet is you could get orders from all over and spread your name farther and faster. Good luck. I am always looking for homemade heavy duty furniture that will last.

When it comes to earrings would you be more prone to buying a pair off the shelf or something one of a kind?
Q. I started a small home based business making handmade custom one of a kind jewelry and it has been doing fairly decent but I am trying to research more directly what I should do as far as making some duplicate pieces. But I know some people who like individualism in thier jewelry. This would be great research tips for me for anyone interested in giving me their opinion. My wedding gown came in Ivory instead of white. It's my first wedding, no children, does it matter that much?
Q. My wedding gown I ordered online is beautiful, pure silk, custom/handmade and fits like a glove, but I ordered it in white, and it came as an Ivory/Antique white and I am a little dissapointed. I contacted dying companies, and they said that silk is naturally this color and cannot by dyed. I cannot return the dress or get a refund (believe me, I tried). This is my first marriage, I have no children, and I was looking forward to the traditional white gown, but everyone is telling me that the Ivory is beautiful and old fashion, and that I should just stick with it. Is everyone just trying to make me feel better by telling me to keep the gown? Are there going to be whispers when I walk down the aisle when everyone sees me in ivory… [cont.]

A. Here's something that I found through a google search: "In modern tradition, the color of western-culture wedding dresses is white. Used in this sense, 'white' or 'wedding white' includes creamy shades such as eggshell, ecru and ivory." Don't even think of it as an issue. You'll be fine with the ivory. I'm sure you'll look gorgeous (especially if you really love it)... Certainly keep the gown and know that it's considered in the white family. Nobody will question it... as long as you stand tall, have a smile on your face and enjoy your special day!

gifts sent to celebs?
Q. I have sent custom, handmade gifts to Ellen Degeneres and Rachel Ray. It's been a while. Does anyone know how long it should take to get some kind of response regarding receipt of these gifts?
Asked by mardene a - Wed Apr 11 12:34:09 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It probably has to go through a million other people before they even try to get it to the actual celeb. For all they know you could be some crazy stalker trying to kill them. It will most likely either never get to them or it will take a long time. Celebs act like they're the President when it comes to stuff like this.

Wedding dress woes...:'(?
Q. A long time ago a friend of mine told me that when I got married, her gift to me would be a custom handmade wedding dress. My friend passed away last spring from brain cancer. I sent her a letter with a picture of my engagement ring. I don't know if she was able to comprehend that I was engaged. Now I am faced with the prospect of shopping for a dress and it tears me up inside. It's a reminder that my friend passed away and just thinking about it brings me to tears. How can I get passed this and enjoy dress shopping?
Asked by Jenny S - Fri Jan 1 01:42:45 2010 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could try taking something she loved, like her favorite material, or her favorite flower and incorporating that into the dress you choose.

What's a good heavy, yet smooth, distortion pedal?
Q. I'm currently using a Little Big Muff, and it's too crunchy for me - notes are sometimes indistinguishable, and there are no dynamics as far as palm-muting goes. I also have a Boss DS-1, which has great dynamics but a gritty, hissy tone that remains however I attenuate the tone knob. I've been considering either the MXR GT-OD, the MXR Distortion III, or the Radial Tonebone Classic (a little too pricey for me, though)... I'm playing through a custom handmade Telecaster (with a high-output Seymour Duncan humbucker, and a Seymour Duncan PAF single-coil neck pickup), into a Fender Jazz Chorus. My distorted playing style ranges from metal, to punk, to hard rock; my band is an electronic dance band, with industrial elements maybe… [cont.]
Asked by Ian - Thu Apr 9 21:26:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best pedal for very smooth sustain is the HM-2 Heavy Metal by Boss. Big difference compared to the DS-1. I have to admit that I changed my pickups for Seymour Duncan which made a big difference in the cleanness in the sound. With your setup, this is weird because I often record with my old Roland Jazz Chorus vs. you having a Fender Chorus LOL. You should get a helluva of a good sound with the HM-2 definitely. Why I know this is because I do lots of studio work with many different types of amps and pedals and what I hear through the recording determines if the pedal is quiet or noisy once recorded.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box. Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links. Research, research, research this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Best way to coat handmade coasters?
Q. Hi all, I'm going to be making some custom drink coasters and need some advice on how to waterproof them. They will be a solid base (wood) with a layer of paper on top (for the custom art) and I need to know how to coat them so that the water obviously does not ruin the ink. Is there a sheet of something I can layer over that lasts to protect the surface? Thanks for any help.

A. Varnish would do fine. Or you could stitch a plastic sheet over it. Just remember to cover the sides too. By the way, varnish is used on papier mache, a paper handicraft product.

selling handmade cards via home parties? What do you think?
Q. I want to sell my handmade cards by booking home parties. This would work similar to an avon or tupperware party: A hostess would recieve a free gift just for hosting the party. She would invite all her friends out for about an hour or so and i would give a short presentation on my products, especially the custom options, and then give them some time to sit and look through binders filled with samples of my handmade cards. There would be games and a free draw. There would be many cards and packages of cards available for take home purchase, or they could order custom cards, invitations and stationary. The hostess then recieves a commission from what has been sold...either 10% cash or 20% merchandise. (so, if i sell 200$ worth, she can… [cont.]

If someone wanted to make you handmade soap, what would you want?
Q. My wife & I make handmade soap from scratch, using oils and lye as the base. We would like to know what features or details would general people like/want in a custom made soap. For example, what color? What scent/fragrance? What design? (round, or square, or other shape...) If you have NEVER used or even bought a bar of handmade soap, what would entice you to? Thanks for all reasonable answers! :)
Asked by Life after 45 - Wed Feb 7 13:52:53 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would love to find a cucumber/melon scent with that "loofah" type grit in it. Rectangle shape. (From time to time I'd appreciate finding a specialty shape that was in a normal size) I've purchased home made lye based soap before, I was a little disappointed with the foaming ability. I love for a soap to lather up/foam up well when you use it. I really don't care about the color of a soap, as long as it suds well, cleans well, and smells good. (Except, now,I'm more curious about the color. I tend to shy away from anything red, since I got a specialty soap that dyed my tub, washcloths, etc... red.)

How do you figure out shipping costs for ebay/etsy?
Q. I was interested in selling a few handmade bead jewelery items on etsy, but I was curious as to how you can figure out the cost of shipping an item before you have an address. I've seen with etsy and ebay that people list a shipping cost even for custom items. Is there a website that you use to figure this out? Thanks in advance for any information!

A. Package your jewelry up like you were going to mail it, weigh it, and use the postage calculator at usps.com to estimate it to the farthest part of the US (for me in PA, I calculate shipping to Alaska!). If you are over cautious like I am, I actually list a smidge over what I think shipping will cost (include the cost of your packaging materials too!), and then refund back any excess. You can check out the Policies section of my etsy shop to see how that works -
